During mediation, couples sit down with a licensed, third party mediator, to try and reach an agreement outside of court. Negotiations are confidential and non-binding, meaning if a settlement can’t be reached, nothing can be used against you in court at a later date.
Mediators are often lawyers or other professionals who have extensive knowledge in divorce law, and have developed skills to help parents work through difficult topics to find a resolution. Attorneys aren’t required during mediation, but a spouse may hire their own independent attorney at any time.
