Custody is divided into two main categories: legal and physical.
Legal custody is the authority to make important decisions on behalf of a child, including medical procedures, education, and religious upbringing. Physical custody refers to the child’s day-to-day schedule; primarily where they are living on a day to day basis as well as how they will divide holidays with the parents and spend vacation time with the parents.
After divorce, it’s common for parents to share legal custody equally, with physical parenting time being apportioned based upon what works best for the children and the family.
